Spotlight Florida: Working with Aging Client Workforces
Enterprise Integration feels the impact of an aging workforce—from the outside
As CEO of Enterprise Integration, a Jacksonville, Florida-based information technology services provider, Michael Locher has few gray hairs among his 100 employees, whose median age is around 40. But an aging employee base at some of his clients’ companies offers plenty of challenges to him and his company.
Take one client, the parent company of a large railway freight carrier in the Eastern U.S. “We manage all 11,000 of their end-user service devices,” Locher reports. “There’s a large number of users about to retire, and many of their replacements will be part of the MTV generation: they want their information and they want it now. Plus, the way they work is changing. There are a lot of Blackberry users and remote employees today who couldn’t have worked the same way even 10 years ago.”
Distributing information and maintaining networks on multiple technology platforms are only part of Enterprise Integration’s challenge. In a post-9/11 world, they also must insure security, particularly for vulnerable clients like railroads. Locher’s company also keeps all of the aforementioned clients’ data secure, and must extend that protection to a whole range of devices and transmission methods far removed from the old-style central data processing system. “Our job is to deliver to each of them the information they need when they need it and to do it in a secure way regardless of the device being used,” he says. “Information is the glue that holds companies together.”
Locher sees information as a vital company asset, just like any raw material. His challenge is to deliver it seamlessly to those who need it. “We go against the grain of traditional IT service providers, which is reactive: ‘there’s a problem; I can fix it.’ Our goal is to spot and fix problems before they affect the end-user. No industry changes more quickly than ours, so we have to work hard to stay ahead of the demands of our customers and anticipate their needs.”
